Solon Comet soccer rolls to District Finals

October 30, 2015

Wednesday night in the District Semifinals, on the slippery and wet turf of Stewart Field, the Solon Comets had an offensive outburst over the Bees of Brecksville and ended up winning by a score of 5-2.

The action started quickly as the Bees struck first on a fifth minute goal. The Bees played a beautiful through ball and then their striker made a move that got him by Solon goalkeeper Will Meyer, and then he sent the ball to the back of the net.

It did not take the comeback Comets long to respond, in the ninth minute sophomore Jake Lynn headed in a cross that came from at least 25 yards out to make the game even at one.

The Comets offense instantly started to click after the Lynn goal and in the 20th minute Solon struck again. Solon got a corner kick where senior Jacob Brent knocked the ball in, making the score 2-1 Comets.

Although for the rest of the half the Comets controlled the ball, they did not score again, keeping the score at 2-1 going into the half.

In the second half, the Comets came out with the intent to extend their lead. With about 20 minutes left in the game, after getting pushed down in the goalie box, senior Josh Baskind took advantage of a penalty kick to put the Comets up by two.

Just six minutes later Baskind found the back of the net yet again to make it 4-1 Comets.

However, Brecksville just wouldn’t quit. Not even two minutes after Baskind’s second goal, the Bees scored off of a series of rebound shots to cut the deficit to two.

Brecksville was definitely picking up momentum, as with ten minutes left they fired a shot that looked like a sure goal, but senior goalie Will Meyer made a diving save that was one for the highlight reel. The save deflated the Bees.
With three minutes left the Comets tacked on one last goal on a beautiful cross from Jacob Shannon to Jake Lynn who kicked it straight out of the air and in for his second goal of the night. Lynn’s goal made the score 5-2, where it would stay for the remainder of the game.

“If we keep playing like this, I love our chances to go all the way,” said Senior center back and team captain Jacob Brent.

The Solon Comets will go onto the district finals and play the Hudson Explorers at Twinsburg High School, Saturday October 31 at 4 p.m.
