SHS student athletes commit to college

Madison McGirr, Business Manager

Four Solon students  picked up their pen, and determined their future with SHS’s support on Feb. 1. Seniors Joey Bubonics, Christopher Glaser, Jane Sensibaugh and Darryl Sinclair committed to colleges for either football or soccer on National Athletic Signing Day.

Darryl Sinclair, a SHS cornerback, committed to the University of Findlay. He was the only football player in state to get a full ride to a Division II school.

MM: Why did you commit to the University of Findlay?

DS: It was the best place for me, the best opportunity, and my parents felt comfortable with it so that had a big influence. I loved it when I went down there.

MM: Where do you envision yourself in a few years?

DS: Hopefully, being a physical therapist and helping out people like [helping] with organizations for underprivileged kids.

MM: What role do you expect to play on the team?

DS: My freshman year I don’t expect to be the biggest part, but I do expect to get playing time. I expect to help out anywhere I can.

MM: What have you learned from playing sports in SHS?

DS:I learned that it’s all about family. It’s about team building and bonding. Just being there for one another no matter what happens, we’ve got [each other’s] back. It’s just a bond of brothers. The school is behind you and the whole community is behind you.

MM: What was your favorite sports memory in Solon?

DS: The locker rooms after wins. Just turning up with the team, and it’s just amazing.

Joe Bubonics, this year’s Solon Comets quarterback, committed to the University of Dayton, a Division I school.

MM: Why did you commit to the University of Dayton?

JB: It felt like a place I want to be for the next four years. I had a gut feeling, and I went with it.

MM: Where do you envision yourself in a few years?

JB: A steady job, right out of college, somewhat close to Cleveland. I want to be close to home.

MM: What role do you expect to play on the team?

JB: Quarterback is what I’m expecting to play there.

MM: What have you learned from playing sports in SHS?

JB: That it’s a family attitude here and in sports you have to play as a team, you can’t just be an individual.

MM: What was your favorite sports memory in Solon?

JB: Probably just being in the locker room with all my best friends and all the out of school stuff like team dinners. Not necessarily [events] on the field but all the memories you make off the field.

Christopher Glaser, an offensive lineman for SHS, committed to the University of Virginia a Division I school in Charlottesville.

MM: Why did you commit to the University of Virginia?

CG: The academics-it’s one of the best public universities in the country and the coaches really [made it] feel like home there.

MM: Where do you envision yourself in a few years?

CG:Hopefully winning a national championship at University of Virginia, and then on to the pros.

MM: What role do you expect to play on the team?

CG: Just playing wherever they need me to. I’ll probably be playing guard or center.

MM: What have you learned from playing sports in SHS?

CG: That everything is family and that everything is done with family. [You can’t] win without [the team], got to lose with them.

MM:What was your favorite sports memory in Solon?

CG: Probably beating Mentor. My junior year, we came back with a minute to go, and that was just the best feeling in the world.

Jane Sensibaugh, co-captain and goalie of Solon’s girls soccer team, committed to the University of Cincinnati.

MM:Why did you commit to the University of Cincinnati?

JS: The first day that I walked on campus, I knew it was the one. I just looked at the campus and thought it was the most beautiful thing ever. It felt like home, and all the coaches and athletes there felt like family to me. Plus, it’s really good for my major, criminal justice. Overall it just fit so well that I couldn’t let it go.

MM: Where do you envision yourself in a few years?

JS: Out of college, I’m probably going to law school. I’m going to try to become a lawyer and hopefully from there I’ll be recommended to the FBI and I’ll try to become a special agent.

MM: What role do you expect to play on the team?

JS: I expect to just join the team.

MM: What have you learned from playing sports in SHS?

JS: I’ve learned what it means to be a real teammate. Being there to support your teammates whenever they need it and them doing the same for you. I learned what it’s like to have a strong support system behind you that just encourages and challenges you every step of the way. I learned to become the best that I am, and I hope to carry that throughout my life.

MM: What was your favorite sports memory in Solon?

JS: My favorite memory has to be the bus rides back from away games. They’re always just so fun and especially this year with all the girls on the soccer team, we would be screaming the lyrics to songs and just having so much fun. As soon as we get to Inwood Drive, we would stand up and sing the alma mater and bang on the top of the bus and it would just be so much fun. I’m going to remember that forever.
