Solon v. Twinsburg football review

During the first play of Friday’s game between Solon and Twinsburg, senior linebacker Matt Brown recovered a fumble, putting the offense in great field position for their first drive. A few plays later, junior running back Thomas Wilks took the hand-off and ran seven yards for a touchdown.

The Comets never looked back.

Solon ravaged the Tigers with their stifling defense and dynamic offense on their way to a 36-0 lead at halftime. In the first quarter, senior wide receiver Jake McCurry hauled in a 26 yard pass in the back of the end zone on fourth down. Wilks rushed for two more touchdowns in the second quarter, and senior running back Devon Brown punched in another score before the half expired.

The Comets were a model of efficiency nearly all game. Their first penalty was not conceded until there was 5:02 left in the second quarter and Twinsburg was unable to lay a finger on senior quarterback Joe Bubonics until there was just under five minutes remaining in the first half.

On the opposite sideline, Twinsburg looked more and more defeated each time a Comet broke the plane of the end zone, eventually calling it quits and benching senior quarterback Jalen Tucker in the third quarter. Tucker did everything he could to try and create something on the field, breaking out of the pocket and targeting multiple different receivers, but to no avail. He finished with four completions on 12 attempts for 43 yards.

In the second half, Solon took their foot off of the gas pedal on both sides of the ball. The defense, while still as aggressive, was unable to contain Twinsburg backup quarterback Adam Van de Motter, allowing him to gain 75 yards on the ground throughout the third and fourth quarters. The Tigers finally managed a response on a five yard touchdown pass from Van de Motter to junior wide receiver Christian Edgerson. Edgerson reeled in three of Twinsburg’s seven pass completions on the night. However, the push was too little, too late. The second-team offense did not manage to put up a single point until shortly after Twinsburg’s score, when sophomore wide receiver Sam Bubonics caught a short pass and turned it into a long gain, juking multiple Twinsburg defenders on his way to a 76 yard touchdown.
The 43-7 win makes Solon 2-0 on the year. The team takes on the Stow Bulldogs at Stewart Field on Friday, Sept. 9  in a rematch of last year’s regional semifinals in which the Comets lost, 24-15.
