Solon football players receive AP accolades
December 20, 2016
Each year, the Associated Press releases a roster full of the most talented and best-performing high school football players from around the country. When it came to Ohio, four athletes from Solon were named: Matt Brown (Defensive Player of the Year), Jake McCurry. Nate Westrich, and Thomas Wilks (special mention).

What made this season different than others that allowed you to achieve Defensive Player of the Year?
MB: [One thing that] was different this season compared to previous ones is that I came into this season with experience from my junior year and knew what I needed to do. The game really slowed down and I was able to get better reads and help lead this team.
Is there anyone you can attribute your success to?
MB: All my coaches, especially Coach Bu [Bubonics]. He’s the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. I’ve been lucky enough to work with him for the past four years, and he has challenged me everyday to make me into the player I am today. Next are all my teammates. They’re like brothers to me and they’re always there trying to make me better. Lastly is my family. They come to every one of my games and give me endless support. Through good and bad, they’re always there for me.

What advice would you pass down to underclassmen on the Solon Comets football team?
JM: If I could pass down one message to football underclassmen, it would be that these varsity football seasons will go by quicker than they could ever imagine and to not take them for granted. These are the only years that they have the opportunity to play the game they love with the best friends they’ve had their entire lives, and it’ll be gone sooner than not. Cherish every moment.
What have you gained from your experience on the football team?
JM: I have gained many life lessons that I’ll carry throughout my life. The biggest lesson I believe football has taught me is that life isn’t always going to be fair. You’re not always going to get what you what, worked for, or think you deserve, but that’s life. You have to keep moving forward with a great attitude and control what you can control.
Nate Westrich, OL (SR):

What advice would you pass down to underclassmen on the Solon Comets football team?
NW: Work hard everyday, because there are no second chances. Also, take advantage of the time you have with your team because I promise you, they will forever hold a special place in your heart. Don’t ever take that for granted because it truly does go by too fast.
Any additional comments you’d like me to include?
NW: I’m very proud of my All-State honors. But I couldn’t have done it without my teammates, coaches, the band, cheerleaders, fans, my family, etc. and I just want to take the time to thank all of them. It was truly an honor to play at Stewart Field, and I know I will never forget the memories I’ve made for the rest of my life.

Is there anyone you can attribute your success to?
TW: Easy. The offensive line. If it wasn’t for Chris, Nate, Zach, Mo and Jacob, I wouldn’t [have been] a special mention for the All-Ohio team.
Any additional comments you’d like me to include?
TW: I really appreciate all the seniors who put in all their time and effort this season…shoutout to the cheerleaders for doing a great job all year of getting the fans into the game and when we won knowing all the words to the alma mater when I forgot the words. Also, shoutout to all the band members for playing the fight song for every touchdown this season for our team.
