Students were happy, sad, nervous and excited upon coming back to  at Solon High School for their first day, where a hot topic going around was the new air conditioning system, raising concerns about temperatures in the school. The largest and most popular area that has been air conditioned is the art wing. Including rooms 176B and 185, the rooms of English teacher Jennifer Buemi and Art teacher William Nyerges.

In the words of Buemi, the new air conditioning has had a positive affect in students’ productivity.

“My students and I are comfortable which builds a better learning environment… ” Buemi said. “Instead of feeling hot and irritable, my students and I are able to focus on learning.”

“There has never been A/C in that entire back hallway,” said Solon High School Principal Erin Short. “A large majority is air conditioned now.”

The new system has raised complaints over the cold temperatures, in addition to hot temperatures, yet SHS Principal Erin Short said she has not received any direct complaints about overbearing heat or frigid cold temperatures.

“If people did complain about how cold it is, I’d say ‘put on a sweatshirt,’” Short said. “We can always put on another layer we just can’t take anymore off.”

On the other hand, Senior Matthew Kantin believes that this school is still too hot, like his physics class, in the math wing.

“I do have a couple classes I think are extremely hot… I think sometimes the heat is almost unbearable,” Kantin said. “I think that the school should do a better job of making sure all rooms are the same.”

Buemi is not a complainer, she is extremely grateful of the people who did this for her. Buemi said she’s excited to finally have air conditioning, as it’s her first time with it since she’s worked at SHS.

“The air conditioning in my classroom has been incredible,” she said. “I am so appreciative of everyone who made the air conditioning a reality in my classroom.”

Short admitted she was worried about the units malfunctioning often, but no maintenance is yet to be needed. Short is confident in the people who put in these new units.

“[The maintenance crew] worked tirelessly all summer getting each of those individual units in,” Short said. “They will continue to come back and work on that.”

The new air conditioning systems raised various opinions, some good, some bad. Administration will have to keep this unit running and in good shape.
