A mix of “The Wizard of OZ”, “Dumbo live action”, “The Wiz” and “The Greatest Showman”, Jingle Jangle, Netflix’s new Christmas movie has something for everyone to enjoy. The movie has  amazing music, incredible dances, marvelous costumes, creativity out of this world, inventions and serious plotlines that will entertain the whole family.

Jeronicus Jangle (Forest Whitaker) was once the greatest toy inventor in the world, until his apprentice Gustafson (Keegan-Michael Key) stole his book of inventions. Gustafson has now become the best toy inventor in the world from selling Jeronicus Jangles inventions as his own. While Gustafson makes his way to the top, Jeronicus pushes everyone away and swears never to invent again turning his once magical store into a dusty old pawn shop. Now it’s up to him and his granddaughter Journey Jangle (Madalen Mills) to save his home from becoming owned by the bank.

The movie is a musical so the singing is a very important part of the movie and they did not disappoint. One of my favorite parts of this movie is the music that is similar to The Greatest Showman. The music has great messages such as never giving up, believing in the impossible and forgiveness. as well as showing the consequence of letting fame go to your head. Another thing I love about the music is that while being categorized as a Christmas movie one of the songs has anything to do with Christmas.

Going along with the Christmas movie, the usual stereotypes of Christmas aren’t included.  There’s Christmas trees and the mention of Christmas but there are no presents, no Santa, no elfs and no reindeer on the roof. This movie is all about creativity and family. About connections and helping each other. The movie is about mending bridges and forgiveness.

Most movies involving Christmas only show how you have to have hope, be kind and believe in magic, but this movie has so much more. One of my favorite lines that Journey sings is “I don’t need a hero to come and save me” showing she doesn’t need someone’s help. She’s her own hero and can solve her own problems. I also love the message when  she sings “don’t go underestimate me… I may be small but I can touch the clouds” which is her way of showing a thousand kids who are going to watch this movie that it doesn’t matter how little they are, they can still make a difference.

Another thing I like about this movie is the inventions. All the inventions are science mixed with magic. They have the Square root of Impossible, the Circumference of Spectacular, the Second Derivative of Sensational and much more. All of these equations are based on the concept of math but are nothing like what they teach at school, well unless I was sick the day they talked about them. They use sine and cosine in a way that we could never do, making it magical.

It’s not just Journey that shows important messages through. Jeronicus shows the importance of forgiveness and not giving up. Evan Gustafson shows important themes of being patient and not letting greed and fame go to your head.

This movie is a great thing for families to watch this holiday season or anytime. From its robots and gears to its magic, singing and flips. This movie has something for everyone.
