His first album in two years, Finneas shocks his fans yet again

After listening to Finneas’s new album “Optimist,” I was speechless. Finneas never fails to make his fans happy with his music. This album was full of him bringing together many different styles of music and putting it all into one album. Featuring his delightful piano chords and layered harmonies, he wrote a mix of classical, ballad and pop while keeping the same theme – coming out of lock-down, reuniting with an old significant other, mental health and trauma he experienced as a child. Through it all, he uses music to escape reality and stay optimistic. From my most favorite to least favorite, here are all the songs in Finneas’s album “Optimist.”
In my favorite song, “Only a Lifetime,” one of his pop features, ranks number four in popularity on his album according to billboard charts. He writes about achieving goals and looking back on childhood. Although the song is on the gloomy side, it still has a main theme of how time is the essence of life. His main goal was to put the point across that you only have one life, it’s not long so don’t waste it.
According to Billboard Charts the seventh most popular song of this album is “peaches etude.” This song is a classical song with a piano solo, which has a very relaxing feel to it. Although the duration of this song is short, I felt very serene while listening to it. It is a great song to listen to while studying or trying to relax.
My next favorite song, “The 90s,” is a rhythmic tune. Listening to this song is uplifting. The harmonies in this song and the loud beats in the middle of the song make you feel motivated to move around and dance.
Quite often, Finneas writes music for Billie Eilish, his sister–he also is featured in a lot of her songs. Finneas has released music himself too. I find that the song “Someone else’s star” has the same vibe that Eilish’s songs do. The vocals are breathy and ballad-like. This song has a reflective feeling to it. He is reflecting on his life and talking about second chances and how much giving them hurts.
“Happy Now?” is an upbeat song. It’s about how success and fame can take you away from reality and how it can take your self interpretation away. This song has the same theme as Billie Eilish’s song “Happier than Ever.” One of the main differences is that it has an upbeat feel to it, when Eilish’s song is more flowy and sad.
“Medieval” – one of his songs with the worst reviews –s a direct attack on Twitter supporters who wait for celebrities to be torn down for a mistake they make. Finneas made a reference to how kings cannot be perfect either. “Nobody goes to heaven with a crown” Finneas quotes in his song.
His opening song to the album, “A Concert Six Months From Now,” has a nostalgic feel to it. Finneas describes the trauma he has experienced, as well as his experiences with a pandemic. His lyrics explain how he can still be optimistic about life.
“The Kids are Dying” is about how upset Finneas is about politics, gun violence, capitalism and climate change. Finneas talks about how nobody ever catches a break: “What the news says, the other side says it’s fake.” The lyrics justifies how angry the controversy of politics makes him. This song represents modern times because in the past two years, we have had an exponential growth of controversy regarding different social, political, and environmental issues.
Another really popular song, “Love is Pain,” is about heartbreak and death. Although it’s a pretty depressing song, the beautiful harmonies and piano lines feel relaxed and peaceful.
“Around my neck” is a song that is about intimacy and love. This song is upbeat and has amazing drum solos. The background phrases add a spooky feel to the song but also keep it lively.
The song “What they’ll say about us” is full of beautiful piano lines. This song is about COVID-19 hospitalizations and Black Lives Matter protests. “I kind of wrote this song as if you were singing to your loved one, who was in a hospital bed, while the world was protesting outside,” Finneas told WSJ Magazine that this song has a sentimental meaning, and it is about a sensitive topic to many listeners.
“How it ends,” is about how life is short. Tell those who matter to you that you love them. Finneas made this song a big reminder to not take things for granted. He wants to make sure his fans live their life to the fullest. This song is eye opening, just like experiences in life can be.
“Hurt Locker”is my least favorite song. I find this song hard to like. It’s about a struggling married couple. Although this song is very liked by the public, I find it unmelodic and hard to feel what he felt in this song.
Overall, Finneas never fails to please his fans with his music. Not only is he a musical genius but he makes sure his fans feel the same emotion he is while he is singing his songs.
