Continuing Solon High School’s efforts to improve diversity this year, the school welcomes its newest club– Islamic Culture Club. The club was founded by Seniors Fasiha Amir and Myiesha Alam who want to reverse and negate negative stereotypes regarding their culture. Alam gives her insight on the club below.
Q: What are you most excited about this year?
A: What I’m most excited for this year is the mock-Ramadan that we are planning. We would celebrate Iftar and bring all the traditional foods to the meeting. It would be in late May.
Q: What other activities or trips do you have planned?
A: So we’re planning to go to the Cleveland Art Museum and look at the Islam exhibit probably around November.
Q: Why did you think it was important to create this club?
A: I think it was definitely an important aspect to bring to Solon because there are so many Muslims here. I mean honestly it was crazy to me that there wasn’tw already an Islamic Culture Club. Me and Fasiha always kind of talked about it so we were like why not just make it.
Amir goes into further detail about her upbringing and importance of the club below:
Islamic Culture Club is always welcoming new members. For more information visit their webpage on the Solon School’s website or their booth at the club fair Sept. 6-7.
