Solon High School introduced a new member to the Wellness Center– his name is K-9 Therapy Officer Henry, a therapy dog who is officially certified to help students with their stress and anxiety.
With the Wellness Center being a newer addition to the high school, SHS Wellness Director Michele Shene is passionate about making it a comfortable place for students. The addition of a therapy dog is something that Shene supports due to its emotional benefits.
“When we were looking at increasing things in the wellness center for kids, a police officer had come in and he had commented that they were trying to work with a therapy dog,” Shene said. “I thought it would be a great idea for students and staff to have that opportunity.
“It’s been proven in scientific studies that petting a dog or an animal reduces stress and increases good hormones.”
Henry is not only a feature to be loved by the SHS students, but he is also a comfort to staff. Spanish teacher Betsy Beveridge always makes time to see Henry when he is in the Wellness Center.
“I love Henry. He’s so sweet, and he’s soft and he just makes me smile,” Beveridge said. “Anytime I walk into the [Wellness] Center and see Henry, I just immediately smile and I’m so happy to see him.”
Many students at SHS struggle with stress and anxiety. The pressure of school can be difficult for students to handle. However, Henry has the ability to turn student’s mood’s around. Junior Adom Sharpley likes to spend time with Henry because he offers a break from stressful school days.
“He puts me in a good mood,” Sharpley said. “Being around him makes you calm.”
Shene enjoys seeing the positive effects that Henry has on his visitors.
“When [students and staff] come in and see him, everyone breaks into a smile, they love him.”
At the moment, Henry visits the wellness center every Friday. The high school has not yet confirmed that Henry will continue these frequent visits next year. Many hope that he does, though.
“Henry needs to be here all the time,” Beveridge said.
