The Solon Marching Band annually appoints new executive officers, librarians and historians. Mallory Kavanagh, one of the band’s historians and Zach Lawrence, one of the executive officers, provide insight on their outlook for the 2024-2025 season and their overall experience in the band in the interviews below. Mallory Kavanagh elaborates on her feelings in the Q & A below.
Q: What instrument do you play and what influenced you to choose that one specifically?
A: Tuba, and I picked it back in fifth grade when I went in to try out instruments to decide which
one I wanted to play. I got it confused with a different one, and then I just kept playing it.
Q: What week usually has the best game?
A: The homecoming game is always my favorite because there is so much excitement leading up to that Friday and Saturday.
Q: What is your favorite marching band memory?
A: Every year the tuba section goes to this haunted house that is an hour and a half away, and it is super fun and scary. We get home super late and go to Waffle House after.
Q: What’s your favorite song you’ve played in your high school career?
A: “Industry Baby,” for sure, but my favorite march was “Cold Hearted.”
Q: Do you have any advice for younger people considering playing an instrument or those who are currently playing one?
A: They should just play it and not be afraid of what others think because it’s super fun.
Zach Lawrence explains his experience in the band and expresses his feelings about the upcoming homecoming game in the video below:
The band will play at Solon’s home stadium Stewart Field on Sept. 27, Oct. 10 and Oct. 25.
