In hopes of creating a Power of the Pen Club– a club for middle schoolers to compete in writing tournaments– SHS recently welcomed the Creative Media Club. The club was founded by Mandi Lu and the advisor is Laura Lagania. The club competes in competitions and aims to create an atmosphere where students can enjoy writing freely and creatively.
Read what Lagania has to say about the club below.
Q: What does the club do?
A: We compete in the “Just Write It Competition” which includes kids from Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Q: Why did you become the advisor?
A: We had a podcasting club at my old school, and we won a competition. I wanted to bring a club like that to Solon. Kids weren’t really interested in the podcast idea though, more in writing. Mandi Lu decided to start the club and was asking the English teachers for an advisor.
Q: What do you hope people take out of the club?
A: A lot of kids like writing, but kids do not enjoy it in school. Most kids like to write when telling stories. [I hope] they use it as a way to make writing fun.
Q: What is “Just Write It?”
A: Kids get a topic and have 45 minutes to write about it and then get judged on their writing.
