Solon High School senior Sonia Lamarre has been playing soccer since she was five years old and is now the first of her graduating class to commit to a D1 school for athletics. Lamarre committed to Seattle University during her junior year. Now, Lamarre plans to graduate high school early and join the Redhawks for their 2025 spring season.
High school sports require serious commitment and hard work in order to be successful. Lamarre said she has a pressing schedule with practice and training before and after school.
“A usual practice day for me is I’ll train in the mornings before school from 6-7:30,” Lamarre said. “Then I’ll go to school, and I’m in SAQ [Strength, Agility and Quickness class] right now, so I lift there, then I train after school as well.”
One of Lamarre’s teammates, junior Camryn Cayne said that Lamarre’s soccer abilities help the team tremendously by scoring a lot of points. According to maxpreps.com, Lamarre has scored 12 goals this season.
“She is really encouraging and she brings a great energy to the team,” Cayne said. “She is also just so much fun to watch because you know she’ll be doing the most and still scoring.”
In addition to her great sportsmanship on the field and with her teammates, Lamarre’s brother Elias Lamarre also said how hardworking she is as a player and person.
“As she trained more and got better, I noticed she gained more confidence and became a better leader on and off the field,” Elias Lamarre said.
Sonia Lamarre said that her love for soccer has always occurred, lasting long into her high school years and continuing into her upcoming college years. She said that it is nerve racking to be starting college in January, but is excited to be joining the team.
“I know the coaches believe in me and I’ve met everybody and it’s just such a good group so I am beyond excited,” Sonia Lamarre said.
Choosing a college to apply to and attend is typically a difficult choice for students, especially when it involves leaving earlier than expected, but Sonia Lamarre said how she knew right away Seattle would be the right fit for her.
“I showed up to Seattle [University], and I loved it from the moment I stepped off the plane, it was perfect,” Sonia Lamarre said.
