Del Torto broke the school record for the Boys 300m Hurdles with a time of 37.85 seconds at the Walsh Jesuit John Hasenstab Warrior Relays 2025 on April 19. This record was previously set in 2016 by Clayton Musick with a time of 38.07 seconds.
In an interview conducted before the Walsh Jesuit meet, Del Torto said it was a season goal of his to break the Boys 300m Hurdles record.
During indoor track season, Del Torto tied the school record for the 60m hurdles with the 30th fastest time in the country this season. Additionally, the boys 4 x 2 team consisting of Del Torto, Henry Sharpley, Elias Lamarre and Cole Taylor set the school record for this event and finished second at the Division I state indoor track and field meet, ranking 27th in the country.
SHS teacher and track sprinting coach Dan Iwan has been coaching Del Torto for four years now. Iwan said he believes his natural talent isn’t the biggest contributor to his success.
“He always had some natural talent, obviously,” Iwan said. “But he has consistently worked through the years to get him to the spot where he was able to attain that very high mark.”
Iwan said his consistent hard work was a necessity in his success, especially due to the setbacks he’s had to deal with over the course of his high school career.
“He was injured his freshman year and was barely able to compete,” Iwan said. “His junior year, he was set to have a really outstanding year, but he also got hurt and that really compromised what he was able to do, especially in hurdles.”
Despite his injury in the past season, Del Torto continues to be successful in the outdoor track season. He has competed in five outdoor meets so far and has continued to be successful. He placed first in the Boys 110 Meter Hurdles at the Austintown Early Bird Invitational 2025 on March 29, at the Ned Weingart Relays 2025 on April 5, at the Stingel Invite 2025 in Pickerton, OH on April 12, and at the Twinsburg vs. Solon Dual Meet on April 16. He also placed first in the 200-meter dash at the Twinsburg meet.
In his most recent meet, the Walsh Jesuit John Hasenstab Warrior Relays 2025 in Cuyahoga Falls, OH, Del Torto placed first in the Boys 110 Meter Hurdles and the Boys 300 Meter Hurdles.
In order to be successful, Del Torto ensures he prepares properly, as it’s key to his success.
“I make sure I am eating right the day before, and I make sure I am getting enough fluids,” Del Torto said.
Iwan said that having your best athlete on the team also being a person of good character is an elevating aspect for a team.
“Eric Del Torto works extremely hard, and I think everyone knows that he’s the fastest kid on the team,” Iwan said. “He doesn’t take shortcuts, and he does everything that he’s supposed to do. He really practices with intent and that just makes all the others look at him and say ‘you know, we are going to do that too.’”
Sharpley is both a teammate and a friend of Del Torto and said he is a good person to have on the team.
“He really lifts the team up,” Sharpley said. “He’s just a good person to be around. He always helps whoever needs help the most, and he always congratulates everybody. He waits for everyone to finish their race before he goes and celebrates on his own.”
In addition to supporting each other at meets, SHS track athletes work together at practices to help one another improve
“We compete everyday at practice and we just give each other tips throughout the day,” said Sharpley. “So, we increase our strengths and strengthen our weaknesses.”
Del Torto said that he and his teammates contribute to each other’s success by working hard during practices.
“They push me in practice and they really help me get better,” Del Torto said. “They set an example for me to follow, and I set an example for them to follow.”
In addition to his teammates, the coaching has been a large part of helping Del Torto reach his goals as a runner.
“[Iwan] has always been supporting me and helping me with anything I need,” Del Torto said.
When asked about the coaching staff and their tactics, Del Torto said he has a lot of trust in the coaches and the plans they put in place for the squad.
“Stick with it,” Del Torto said. “It might seem a little weird at the start, but if you just follow what the coaches have planned it will all work out.”
Iwan said he continues to have faith in the young athlete, and believes he can be one of the best track athletes in Ohio.
Del Torto is unsure of his plans for college and if he will continue his track career collegiately, but he said he is keeping his options open. Both Iwan and Del Torto himself said they believe he will continue his success throughout the rest of the 2025 outdoor track season.
“I’m sure he would tell you that his goal is to be the best in Ohio,” Iwan said. “Even though that’s a super high standard, he’s already proven that he can do it. So, why back down from it? You gotta go after it. I feel he has the opportunity to be one of the best track athletes in the state.”
