Maddox Batson started his music career by posting on TikTok in 2023. In his first videos, he covered country songs from Zach Bryan, Red Clay Strays and more. As these videos started to gain popularity, he began the journey of writing his own songs such as “Tears In The River” and “I Wanna Know.”
Batson is a multi-instrumentalist (piano, guitar and mandolin) and now has 3.4 Million followers on TikTok. With this platform and popularity, I was intrigued to listen to “Girl In Green.”
Because Batson is based in Alabama and has covered country artists, I didn’t expect to love the song considering I am not the biggest fan of country music.
However, for his age, the vocal skill and range he has is impressive. And I was drawn in by the catchy beat and exceptional instrumentals.
The guitar in the back sets a warm tone and after the intro, the beat picks up with soft snaps in the back. As the chorus begins, there is a prominent beat drop which creates a fun groove.
However, as I began to listen to the lyrics, I wasn’t all that impressed.
The song tells a classic lighthearted high school crush story where Batson is trying to find his “Girl In Green” that he hasn’t seen since he met her.
“If I’m being completely blunt, I’m mostly writing about girls, because I’m mostly thinking about girls,” Batson said in his bio provided by Moxie.
While the song is cute, I didn’t find the lyrics very impressive. For example, “Made me wanna kiss her in front of everyone” and “Man she was looking real fine” weren’t my favorites because of how broad they are and they seemed to be not very well thought out.
While I didn’t love the actual lyrics he was singing, he does present a wide range of vocal ability by switching from his chest voice (lower) to his head voice (higher) throughout the song. Batson is a talented singer, but his lyrics could use some work.
However, considering his age, the song is well done, and I believe he will improve in his upcoming music. He dropped his deluxe version of the album “First Dance” on May 2, 2025 and it is now available to stream on Apple Music and Spotify. Although I wasn’t the biggest fan of “Girl In Green,” I’m tempted to hear what his other songs are about.
