As a way to raise funds for Solon High School’s After Prom, Solon High School will host a Trunk or Treat event on Sunday, Oct. 26, from 12-2 p.m. in the athletic parking lot of Solon High School.
Michelle Shene, a member of the After Prom committee, helped come up with the theme and is helping with the decorations for Trunk or Treat.
“[Trunk or Treat] is where people decorate the trunks of their cars and little kids go around to trick or treat in the parking lot,” Shene said. “A lot of people think it’s safer to go around in the parking lot rather than going up and down the street.”
Members of the After Prom committee, including chair member Becky Utterback, decided to host a fall-themed fundraiser this year. They are helping with the fundraiser by bringing fun activities to the event.
“We are hoping to fill 70 parking spots with Halloween-themed trunks and treats to pass out during the event,” Utterback said. “There will be fall-themed games and facepainting. Plus, since Roxbury [Elementary School] had to sadly cancel their Fall Fest this year, their PTA is sponsoring a petting zoo.”
SHS hosts the After Prom party at the high school the night of prom to bring a fun, yet safe, environment for seniors by purchasing snacks, decorations and activities. In order to achieve this, the PTA needs assistance from the community in order to transform the school for After Prom night. According to Utterback, the committee wanted the upperclassmen involved in fundraising for their own event.
“We also were hoping for an event that included the entire district so we can educate the families of younger Solon Comets on what After Prom is and why it is an important tradition to maintain,” Utterback said.
Students have the opportunity to sign up and fill a spot to help make this event possible.
“We ask that [students] sign up in small groups, commit to showing up the day of, and set up their Halloween-themed ‘trunk’ to pass out treats to the younger kiddos in the community,” Utterback said. “There are also opportunities to help run some fall-themed games during the event.”
After going to After Prom last year, Senior Kristina Kurilenko signed up to help with Trunk or Treat to be able to give back to the community.
“I am looking forward to seeing everyone from the Solon community in their costumes and being able to bring some happiness to the little kids by giving out candy,” Kurilenko said.
The committee has been promoting the event through social media and emails. They hope that the children have an imaginative and captivating experience.
“I love seeing the creativity in the kids,” Shene said. “I love seeing what they come up with. I love seeing them dressed up. The magic with the kids. I feel like those holidays are just magical.”
