Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Hate cannot drive out hate– only love can do that.” At Solon High School, we have a diverse student body. The school system continues to work hard to fight against systemic discrimination along with discrimination in the student body. The school is working towards decreasing overall discrimination in the school system, but the system is not perfect yet. Repeatedly, individuals have shown that they don’t stand with discrimination in the student body and are working towards a better tomorrow. This student-led protest began when Brianna Besteder, Terrin Jackson, and Jaylyn Johnson noticed the frequent use of slurs said by students and decided to take action. Thursday, Oct. 14 a stand against all types of discrimination began after these three students decided to promote action by wearing black to school and encouraging others to do so as well. Below are student-provided quotes which demonstrate that the school body accepts and even promotes differences. We just have to make sure that the administration can keep up with the students progressive attitudes.

Equality: The state of being equal, especially in status, rights and opportunities. Solon High School tries its best to make sure every student feels comfortable in their own skin. Our staff here at SHS works around the clock in order to accommodate everyone’s needs. We will not let discrimination bring our school down, we will fight against it and support everyone that decides to be a part of the movement.
