As the new school year starts, so do sports and activities, along with tons of classes. I took time to speak with a Solon High School Senior, Jessica Birchak about how her mental health matters at Solon High. With pride, she shared with me the effects of the school while participating in sports.

Q: How has gymnastics at Solon altered your high school experience?

A: I would say it’s mostly positive because I’ve been able to make a lot of friends and grow a lot of bonds with a lot of people, but I do think it also brought a little bit of negativity when it gets stressful, especially when you’re trying to balance schools and your sport as well as like the stress that comes with sporting competitions.

Q: How has cheer changed your mentality?

A: It brought an uplifting side of mentality because it’s helped me to work hard for what you want, and everyone at the practice is super positive, so it’s kind of just allowed me to bring that into my life, even outside of school.

Q: What were some of your thoughts when covid hit during your sports and activities?

A: Honestly, it allowed me to appreciate my sports even more, and helped me redefine my love for them. Once they’re taken away from you, you realize how much you needed them in your life.

Q: Was it difficult for your coaches during the covid season?

A: Honestly, I think they liked it better. They had other jobs to attend to and we kind of took up some of their free time. But since we were with them most of the time we created good relations and had fun almost every day.

Moreover, mental health with sports and activities are encouraged at SHS for a fun school year and lots of opportunities to join.
