Boba! A popping chewy delight

Emma Wellman and Sasha Zahler

We (Emma and Sasha) taste tested some different tea and topping combinations from Ming’s Bubble Tea. Boba, also known as bubble tea, is typically a fruity or milk herbal tea with some sort of topping at the bottom. At Ming’s, you can customize drinks however you like. First pick a base of tea, then you can customize your sweetness and ice level. Then you can pick your toppings, like coffee jelly, lychee jelly, tapioca, strawberry popping pearls, mango popping pearls and more. Boba is very popular, now especially, and can be catered to everyone’s taste. Read our boba opinions below.

Raspberry Chai Milk Tea with Tapioca Boba

Sasha: I would say the taste is quite delectable. It isn’t super sweet– it has almost a cinnamon fall taste. The boba is the perfect texture. They kind of don’t taste like anything, it’s more a texture thing for me, and that is why I like it. This is good for boba beginners, I would rate it like an 8/10.

Emma: I would say it isn’t very sweet. It kinda reminds me of a spicy chai not a strong chai and a little raspberry after taste. The tapioca is a good topping to pair with this tea, but I wouldn’t get it again. I rate it a 6/10.

Coconut Almond Milk Tea with Coffee Jellies and Tapioca Boba

Sasha: In my opinion, the coconut almond tastes like a perfume– it gives me bad vibes. I don’t love it. It literally tastes like a scented lotion, and normally, I’m not a weird texture person because I love boba, but coffee jellies are weirdly hard like they feel kinda pointy, and I don’t love that but the idea is there. I wouldn’t get it, and I would probably rate it like a 2/10.

Emma: I would say I really like it, and I like the coffee jelly with it because it is a different flavor. The coconut almond is not very sweet but paired with the jellies and boba it elevates the flavor and it is the perfect amount of flavor. I rate it a 9/10

Strawberry Green Tea with Blueberry Popping Boba

Sasha: I would say it’s a really good starter boba to get if you’re trying to get someone into the boba world. It kinda reminds me of getting a tea from Starbucks with just the popping pearls as well. It’s very simple, enjoyable and refreshing, and I rate it an 8/10.

Emma: I would say it’s a basic flavor like it kinda just tastes like strawberry juice. I don’t really taste any green tea. The tea is very sweet and so is the blueberry popping boba, but I still like it, and it’s basic, but like it’s fine. I rate it 7/10. I wouldn’t get it again though because it is too much in my comfort zone.

Pomegranate Lemonade Tea with Lychee Jellies and Strawberry Popping Pearls

Sasha: I would say that I really enjoy this. I think that it is a little more unique than the strawberry green tea. The taste is a little more floral. I like the mix of the jellies. I think they go well together, so it adds a unique element. Another great starter boba that’s a little more out of the comfort zone. Also, it’s great if you don’t want to off the bat just try the tapioca because the jellies and the popping pearls are a little more flavorful. I rate it 9/10

Emma: I would say that I like this one. I think it’s really good, but I also think even without the strawberry popping boba it would still be good because I like just the lychee with the drink. Also, the drink alone is also really good, but with the lychee it is sweet and savory at the same time. I would rate it a 9/10.

Honey Almond Milk Tea with Tapioca Boba and Coffee Jellies

Sasha: I would say compared to the coconut almond, I like the drink itself better. I think it kinda tastes like a honeydew, but it’s really milky. I rate it a 2/10.

Emma: I would say that it is milk with honey –that’s pretty much exactly what it tastes like. The tapioca is a good pair with it, but it’s just pretty simple. I rate it a 6/10.

Overall, we rate Ming’s Bubble Tea an 8/10 because the quality of their boba can be inconsistent. The atmosphere, drinks and helpful employees made it a tasteful and enjoyable experience. There are many other flavors and combinations that we did not try, for example, the Yakult tea that has a thicker consistency we are looking forward to trying.
