The second movie was packed with surprises with a notable plot twist at the end. From the singing and dancing, to the captivating acting, this movie was the perfect ending to the “Wicked” series. If you haven’t yet, find some time over winter break to go see it.
Acting
The acting in this move was superlative. Ariana Grande, who plays Glinda, captured Glinda’s character perfectly. In the first movie, we see Glinda as an arrogant character. In the second movie, she becomes a strong headed character. We see her take part in the more intense scenes and start to realize that not everything she believed was true. By the end of the movie, Glinda turned into this amazing and passionate character. Not only did she realize that she has to take control of her life, but she arrived at the conclusion that she has to take charge and pave her own way. The emotion Grande showed in her scenes made the movie feel more personal. I felt like I was in the movie feeling the emotions they were feeling. Overall, I would give the character Glinda a 10/10.
Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba, was a different story. In the first movie Elphaba was a passionate and strong headed character. She fights for the rights of animals and equality all throughout Oz. At the end of the movie, unfortunately, her passion for equality leads her to becoming the “villain” of the story. She is forced to leave Oz and go into hiding. In the second movie, Elphaba’s main goal is still to have equality for the animals throughout Oz. Everyone still fears Elphaba and believes she is a horrible person. To me, Elphaba was just an extremely passionate person and will stop at nothing to get what she wants. This passion turned her into an annoying character in the movie. Elphaba didn’t care about anyone she hurt on her way to reaching her goal. Erivo did a good job of displaying Elphaba’s character. However, she could have done better in the second movie. She made Elphaba seem somewhat monotone and not as enthusiastic as she was in the first movie. Again, the scenes in the second movie for Elephaba were more depressing, I just thought she could have done better. Overall, I would give the character Elphaba a 7/10.
Singing
The singing from Grande and Erivo was amazing. In both movies Grande and Erivo refused to use autotune in their voices. The lack of assistance from autotune makes their singing ten times more impressive. The emotion in their voices made me feel moved in all of their musical scenes. Both actors are impressive singers. This movie showed how talented they truly are. The songs in the movie were just as good. In some musicals, the music is bland and boring. In “Wicked,” it’s the complete opposite. The music is catchy and fun. I even catch myself singing the music sometime while I am out and about. Overall, I would give the singing in the movie a 10/10.
Costumes
Elphaba and Glinda both wear extravagant outfits in the movie. Elphaba is seen with this lavish cape with intricate designs on it. Glinda, throughout the movie, wears huge gowns. Each gown is woven with gorgeous fabrics. These costumes were perfect for the movie and fit each character perfectly. To me, it showed how much the directors cared about the movie and every little detail that went into it. Overall, I would give the costumes a 100/10.
Overall
In the end, I am sad to see the end of the “Wicked” saga. The second movie though, was the perfect ending to the story. Grande and Erivo were the perfect choice to act as Glinda and Elphaba. I am excited to see where their acting careers take them in the future. I would definitely recommend seeing this movie, a 10/10.
