Solon High School’s Student Council (STUCO) is running their second annual Winter Dance on Saturday, Feb. 21. Secretary Aaryaa More speaks on the behind-the-scenes of planning, creating and preparing for the event.
Q: How did STUCO come up with the idea of having a Winter Dance?
A: We were talking about winter events last year and Mr Fisher, our advisor, spoke about a Winter Dance that would’ve happened a couple years ago, and we thought it would be a good idea to bring it back so that students can have almost a boost of energy and fun right before AP exams. I feel like it’s a good idea because we all just thought it would be really fun to come together.
Q: How does STUCO plan out the Winter Dance? Meaning, what steps are you taking?
A: In terms of steps, I feel like we follow a similar pattern we did with our homecoming dance. Because we have a group of twenty plus people on the executive board for officers, we were able to delegate roles to each grade. For example, if you look at just advertising, some kids would make Instagram posts, some kids would make posters, some kids would make TV slides. When it comes to the bigger parts, like decorations or communicating with the DJ, our officers take up those roles. Tony, he’s in charge of our decorations, he takes together little groups and he has people sketch out designs. So, when it comes to the actual decoration day and the day of the dance, it’s much easier to execute everything.
Q: Knowing that last year was the first Winter Dance, what was the type of feedback STUCO received that helped construct the dance for this year?
A: I think the primary feedback we received was the advertising of it [was casual] and different from homecoming–what we did with that feedback was change the way that we marketed the dance and really emphasize the fact that at the end of the day, it’s just a dance regardless of the location of it, how long it is and the dress code. The other feedback that we received from homecoming that we decided to incorporate into the winter dance [is that] we are creating a DJ form, so all students can submit songs so that we have a much better gauge of what kind of music students like to listen to.
So the theme that [was] voted on was Aurora Borealis. Basically, we want to embody the lights, colorfulness and very glowy nature of the Aurora Borealis. We’ll probably have a lot of decorations with lights and will probably have a lot of the green, pink and blue color scheme. Overall, we just want to show what it’s like to have fun and just being in an environment that’s really pretty.
Q: What do you believe will be the highlight of the Winter Dance?
A: In my opinion, it’s probably getting to see all of my friends, and it’s a great night to just relax and forget about all the stresses about school. It’s special because this is my senior year, and I’m getting to participate in the photo booth, dance a lot and just take in the sight of our Aurora Borealis inside our school.
The event will run from 7-9 p.m in Senior Commons and the cafeteria. Tickets are currently on sale for $10 on the Solon website and will continue to sell until Feb. 21 at 5 p.m.
