Spring is like a boomerang. It always returns like clockwork.
Each year, people get excited that spring is coming back. The warm weather. The pretty flowers. But it’s just a letdown every time.
After a lousy, cold winter, people look forward to the day when we have temperatures over 40 degrees consistently.
The reality?
Every week, the temperature can differ by 20 degrees Fahrenheit. One day, the temperature might be 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and the next it could be 35. One day in Ohio it’s sunny and you’re sitting outside, but the next you could be sitting in your basement during a tornado warning.
Not only does the day-by-day temperature change constantly, but the daily highs and lows do as well. You leave for the day in a fleece, but by the time you get home after dinner, you’re shivering.
No matter the temperature, every day of spring is either a massive rain storm or windy enough to pick an elementary schooler up and take them to Oz.
Just last April, it rained on 16 days in Cleveland, Ohio. That’s over half of the month.
But at least April showers bring May flowers, right? Wrong.
The only thing any month of spring brings is allergies.
Thanks to the blooming trees and flowers, people start going outside, but spring hits you in the face with the great allergen of pollen. Watery eyes. Runny nose. Feeling like you have to sneeze every second of every day.
Once the beauty of nature returns, it feels like you are in a 3-month-long Olympics game of trying not to sniffle.
It’s not really beautiful, though. It starts off with flowers growing and leaves coming back onto the branches, but the green grass quickly turns brown and muddy after three days of rain
Spring is known as the season of fresh starts: new plants, no snow and more cleaning.
Spring cleaning is the excuse people use for getting rid of the stuff they have been holding on to, but don’t actually need.
After one day of tearing the house apart, trying to organize and find donations, most motivation is lost, with half of the house looking spotless, and the other half looking like a hoarder’s house.
The seasonal motivation tricks us and makes us think we’re new people. It’s really just the first day of sunlight that ends up leaving the next day.
Once spring starts, the only hope is to look forward to the future when summer comes. The sun is always shining, and the heat is always burning.
People think spring is better because it follows the cold, dark winter, but, really, it’s the 50% season. 50% is warm, 50% is not raining and 50% pretty.
It has commonly been said that spring is a good season, but not because it’s actually good. It was chosen as a good season just because it’s better than January and February.
In the end, spring isn’t horrible. It gets you out of winter, which feels like the longest period ever. It is the city of false hope where you ask for warmth, and it only gives you rain, but we tolerate it because it’s a transition that eventually leads us to a shimmering summer.
