Mother’s Day arrives each year wrapped in flowers, cards and brunch reservations, but its meaning runs far deeper than the traditions seen on the surface. Beyond the gifts and celebrations, the holiday serves as a reminder to recognize the constant work mothers do everyday.
From offering support during difficult times to making countless sacrifices for their families, mothers often provide the foundation that hold a strong household together. Mother’s Day gives families a chance to pause, reflect and show appreciation for everything mothers do.
To better understand the importance of the holiday, I spoke with Solon High School students and teachers about what Mother’s Day means to them and how they plan to celebrate the occasion with their families.
”Mother’s Day to me is a day centered around celebrating your mother and all the important women in your life that dedicate themselves to hard work and helping others,” Sophomore Brendan Watson said.
For many students and teachers, one of them being Science teacher Claire Stoltz, the holiday is not defined by expensive gifts or elaborate celebrations, but spending quality time with family and making mothers feel appreciated.
“Quality time with my family is the best gift I get on Mothers Day,” Stoltz said.
Many families celebrate the holiday through traditions that bring everyone together. Watson explained that his family’s annual brunch tradition has become something he looks forward to every year.
“Every year me and my family go to brunch at a different place, and it always tastes incredible,” Watson said. “But most importantly, spending time with my family is what makes this day so special,”
Beyond traditions and celebrations, many students reflected on the lasting influence their mothers have had on their lives. Mothers often serve as role models. They teach important values such as perseverance, kindness and positivity through both their words and actions. Freshman Danny Dautovic shared how his mother’s attitude has inspired him personally.
“My mom makes such a powerful impact on my life because she always is there for me and always keeps a positive attitude when things are tough, which has helped me follow the same in my life to have a positive impact on the world like she does,” Dautovic said.
Students also expressed gratitude for the constant support and encouragement their mothers provide, even during life’s most challenging moments. Watson explained that having someone who is willing to help and believe in him is something he deeply values.
“I am thankful for having my mother because she always supports me in what I do, and helps me even when I don’t need it, which I am really thankful for,” Watson said.
While every family celebrates Mother’s day differently, the meaning behind the holiday remains universal. It is a day dedicated to recognizing the women who continually give their time, energy and love to the people around them. Watson even plans on getting his mom some nice new baking equipment.
“I plan on getting her some new baking equipment because she bakes all the time,” Watson said.
